More commonly though the separate air tank for the compressor unit is used because of the size of the air compressor needed and the fact the air compressor is static or fixed. While smaller, portable units usually come with the tank fitted, larger industrial applications are bought separately and then installed as a unit. Rotary, screw and scuba or medical air compressors very often have separate tanks to ensure performance and capacity.

Tanks are either horizontal or vertical in their layout and bolted to floor or wall. Most industrial applications require certification that the unit is installed correctly and meets all relevant standards. You rarely see separate tanks for 12v, small or mini pump air compressors.

Sadly, too many of these patented designs are simply stolen and made to lesser standards with sub standard materials. When sold they don’t have the marketing and warranty support of major brands and so are far cheaper. Not such a problem for cheap 12v compressors, but when you move up into rotary, oilless, industrial and compressors made to supply breathing equipment, quality is preferred.

Still, there is a market for low end air compressors, even diesel and large gas powered units both new and used and the quality has improved considerably in the past five years.

When it comes to buying a cheap air compressor, ask about the warranty and if the unit can be serviced, are spare parts available and so on. Compressors aren’t complicated but if you need an o-ring and they use a slightly odd sized one, it might be cheaper to buy a new unit altogether!
